Day Services

Helping you whenever we’re needed

The aim of our Day Services is to provide safe, supportive environments where people with disabilities can take part in activities that are purposeful, goal-oriented, and personally meaningful.

Day Services

Every programme is designed to support individuals in meeting new people, building friendships, developing valued social roles, and creating a strong sense of belonging within their community.

No two experiences are the same. Each person who attends our services has their own unique pathway, shaped by their strengths, preferences, and goals. By taking a strengths-based approach, we ensure that every individual is supported to reach their full potential, whether that means learning daily living skills, exploring creative arts, developing confidence in community settings, or preparing for employment.

Barróg Healthcare currently operates three Day Services in County Cork, as well as an innovative out-of-hours service that applies the day service model during the evening. This flexible approach recognises that people’s lives don’t always fit neatly into a 9–5 routine, and ensures that individuals can access meaningful activities and social connections at times that work best for them

Understanding Day Services for Adults with Disabilities

Day Services are designed to enhance quality of life, promote independence, and foster community inclusion. At Barróg, our supports provide meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in daily activities that reflect their interests and aspirations. Services are tailored to individual needs and delivered in line with the HSE’s New Directions framework, which sets out twelve supports for living a life of one’s own choosing.

Whether someone is focused on building friendships, learning practical life skills, or exploring employment opportunities, our Day Services provide the right environment and guidance. We create opportunities that are structured, purposeful, and flexible — always centred around the individual.

Types of Day Services

Barróg Healthcare offers a wide variety of day service opportunities, ranging from structured, centre-based programmes to community engagement and vocational training. Each service is designed around the individual, helping them to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build valued social roles.

Our day centres provide a safe, structured environment where people can enjoy meaningful, goal-oriented activities. Purpose-built spaces such as activity rooms and sensory areas give participants the opportunity to explore creative arts, cookery, and personal development while also supporting relaxation and self-regulation. Daily routines encourage confidence and social interaction, while our trained staff ensure each person’s support plan is delivered in line with New Directions principles.

Community participation is at the heart of our approach. We facilitate opportunities for individuals to take part in everyday community life, from using local libraries and sports facilities to volunteering or joining clubs. These real-world experiences build independence and social skills, while also promoting visibility and inclusion for people with disabilities. By working within the community, participants learn to navigate public transport, access local services, and build relationships, ensuring that inclusion is not just a concept but a lived reality.

For those who wish to prepare for work or further education, Barróg provides pathways into vocational training and employment. This includes access to ASDAN certification, work placements with local businesses, and supported employment opportunities. Job coaching and career planning help participants identify their strengths and explore opportunities that match their aspirations. In addition, projects such as horticulture and gardening provide hands-on, practical learning experiences that combine skill development with wellbeing.

Day Services at Barróg are built around the belief that every person should have the chance to shape their own life. Our programmes offer a balance of structure and flexibility, ensuring that supports can evolve as needs and goals change.

Each participant has an individual plan developed in partnership with them. This plan idtenfies personal aspirations, areas for growth, and preferred activities, ensuring that supports remain relevant and meaningful. Regular reviews allow plans to be updated, keeping pace with changing needs and encouraging choice and control at every stage.

Our services place strong emphasis on equipping individuals with skills that foster independence. This may include cooking, budgeting, personal care, digital literacy, or time management. Alongside these practical skills, participants are supported to develop social connections, communication abilities, and self-advocacy, all of which are essential for living more independently and confidently.

Day Services are about more than just filling time they are about creating purpose. Participants can explore creative arts such as music, drama, and crafts; take part in sports and exercise tailored to their abilities; and engage in cookery and nutrition programmes that promote healthy living. Horticulture projects and educational workshops provide further opportunities for learning and self-expression, while sensory areas offer calm spaces for self-regulation and wellbeing.

For those pursuing vocational goals, Barróg offers structured pathways into employment and volunteering. This includes vocational assessments, career planning, supported employment placements, and workplace adaptations where necessary. With access to training and job coaching, individuals can build confidence in their abilities and take steps towards greater independence and economic participation.

Benefits of Day Services

Day Services at Barróg Healthcare provide significant benefits not only for service users, but also for families, carers, and the wider community.

For Service Users

Day Services empower individuals to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. By developing practical life skills, building friendships, and engaging in purposeful routines, participants experience enhanced self-confidence and reduced isolation. Community involvement strengthens inclusion, while tailored supports ensure that each person can pursue their own aspirations.

For Families and Carers

Families gain peace of mind knowing their loved one is in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment. Day Services also provide respite from daily caring responsibilities, allowing families time for rest, work, or other commitments. Importantly, Barróg works in partnership with families, involving them in planning and reviews so that supports reflect the shared priorities of both service users and their carers.

For Communities

When adults with disabilities are supported to take part in community life, everyone benefits. Communities become more diverse and inclusive, gaining greater awareness and understanding of disability. Local economies benefit from the employment of trained staff and from participants contributing through volunteering or employment. In this way, Day Services enrich both individual lives and the communities around them.

Quality Assurance and Best Practices

Our staff receive continuous training and professional development, ensuring that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to deliver person-centred supports safely and effectively. Health and safety protocols are central to all activities, whether delivered in a centre or in the community.

Quality is measured through ongoing assessment, regular reviews of personal plans, and feedback from service users and families. This evidence-based approach ensures that services are responsive and continually improving. We also embrace innovation in service delivery, making use of assistive technology, sensory environments, and community partnerships to provide creative and sustainable supports.

At Barróg Healthcare, quality assurance is about more than compliance — it is about ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to live a life of dignity, choice, and inclusion.
